4 Blacklisted Hagwons in Yeosu
It takes a lot for a hagwon to get blacklisted because a lot of teachers don’t like to leave a job on a bad note. And why should they?
There are some schools that hire teachers and treat them bad. More often than not, teachers have no one to turn to for help when the situation becomes unbearable since there is no governing body for hagwons. As a result, hagwons can do whatever they want. That’s why teachers turn to the internet.
Yeosu is no exception to bad hagwons that teachers need to know about. Here are the 4 blacklisted hagwons in Yeosu.
- Jae Yeon Kindergarten
- Number two removed as a result of possible disgruntled employee with fabricated information about the school. Overwhelming testimony convinced me to removed the second school in light of new evidence
- Yeosu Wonderland
- E Bo Young Talking Club (Singi-dong branch)
Contact Details: Munsoo-Dong, Yeoseo-Dong, Yeosu, Jeollanam-Do
Reasons
* Underpayments, the Director doesn’t pay at all or when he does, it’s very late.
* Teachers who stand up for themselves are reported to the local police department.

Again let me restate that this post is not an attempt to create a blacklist. It’s only meant to highlight why Teachers who have worked at these schools think it’s worthy of being on this list.
Reasons
* Average length of stay for foreign teachers is 7 months, and considerably less for Koreans.
* 7-8hr day with no breaks. Frequent weekend work with one-day-or-less notice.
* Every communication problem is blamed on teachers.
* Clear instructions given and then yelled at for following them, and not doing something that wasn’t mentioned.
* Degrading treatment of teachers, including Korean teachers
* Now withholding a current Teacher’s last months pay.
* Constant false claims of chain of events.
I would stay away from this one folks
So if you are mistreated by your school and have good reasons why you think this school should be blacklisted, feel free to submit their information using the comment form below. However, if you work at one of the schools or are a representative with first hand experience and feel like your school, if listed above, should not be on this list or have more to add, send your arguments as well.
And remember, if a school is bad to you, do not take it out on the students. Continue to be the best teacher that you can be for the students until you leave the school.

Out of curiosity, did you write the reasons given for blacklisting, or were those just what you received. The grammar made me think that neither side was doing a particularly good job there
It’s a shame that there isn’t a regulatory body to govern academies in Korea. These kind of abuses are rife within the system and would certainly make me think twice about entering the private education industry.

Yeosu Wonderland hasn’t existed since 2008, so you can file that one under irrelevant, but the director this review speaks of left in 2005 or so. I know many people who used to work at EduBest, both Korean and foreign, and although they worked a lot, I never heard overally negative reviews…perhaps it’s changed. It’s been a few years since I left. Can’t speak for the other two.

Good to know Tyler. I will update that one with a note to others. As far as EduBest is concerned I have heard negative reviews from a reliable source recently and that’s why it’s on this list.

A co teacher and I worked at E Bo Young Hagwon, in Shin Bang Dong, Cheonan, for 10 months before being fired.
Why, you may ask, we ask ourselves the same question…
Here are a few of the problems we encountered:
• We arrived in South Korea October 17, 2012, started working the next day, but our contract start date was written as November 2, 2012…
• We worked from 1pm-9pm, Monday to Friday, with one 10 minute break…
• Found out that we were never given insurance and hence no pension…
• Didn’t take one sick day. The one day my director took me to a doctor and drove me straight back to school…
• In June the director said he was moving to the USA and said not to worry because whoever buys the Hagwon will continue our contracts…
• In July asked for the key to our apartment because he was liquidating his assets but not to worry because whoever buys it will rent it to us…
• In July asked us if we were interested in buying the Hagwon…
• In August told us that money was a problem and that he might have to take out a loan to pay our severance and buy our return airfares on his credit card…
So, as I’m sure you can understand, we started to stress a little.
In a meeting on Tuesday 21st August 2012, we were asked why we were unhappy and we mentioned a few things from the list above, his reaction was to stand up, punch the wall 5 times and tell us to ‘get the fuck out of his school’ and that ‘we were fucking fired’!
Having previous experience with his temper, we packed up our things and left. An hour later we got a text message telling us to move out of the school apartment by that evening. Thank goodness for friends as we managed to pack up and move out in time.
We texted him to tell him that we were out the apartment and would come by the school the next day to drop the apartment key and cellphone, and would he please have our letters of release. We received a text the next morning asking what time we were coming and that he only wanted to see one of us, not both.
I arrived at the school and was asked to hand over the key and cellphone. I asked if he had our release letters. He told me that he was not giving them to us. After pleading not to fight and just end this amicably he told me to give him his stuff or he was calling the police. I told him I was calling immigration and The Labor Board, and left!
To end, we had to go to immigration, apply for a D10 visa, which negates our current visa, allows us to stay in Korea and look for another job.
Stay away from this Hagwon and perhaps ALL E Bo Young Hagwons, we have heard that they wish to have the largest franchise in South Korea, so sell the ‘rights to the name’ to any Tom, Dick or Harry!

Wow Danielle, I can’t even begin to say how sorry I am to hear you went through that. It really is heart breaking. And the worst part is that there is still no regulation on hagwons in Korea. As a result, the owners do and get away with whatever they want. But I am glad you took action and got in contact with the right people for a new visa. At the same time I commend you guys for keeping your cool and doing all the right things like reporting him to the Labor Board and going through immigration. No one should have to experience that.
I just hope you are able to find another job that appreciates you and treats you better. Were you able to or did this one leave too much of a bad taste in your mouth? I only wish you the best in whatever decision you make and thank you for sharing your story.

Hi Danielle
I think I may have been contacted to work at this school and would like to know more about your experience (if it IS the same one). It sounds like a bad situation that I don’t want to walk into…
